On 16th April, 1915, the 2nd Cornwall Light Infantry battalion of 82 Brigade, 27th Division moved into trenches at Sanctuary Wood in the Ypres salient where they remained until relieved on 19th April. After a relatively quiet beginning to April things were now beginning to intensify with fierce fighting at Hill 60 in the southern part of the salient and enemy shelling becoming a much greater threat along the whole of the salient. It is likely that it was this that resulted in the death of William Carter who was killed on 17th April.
